USIAS Fellows - recent awards
Several former USIAS Fellows have received awards related to their research work at USIAS.
Senior IUF member appointments for Vincent Dubois and Cédric Sueur
Vincent Dubois (2014 USIAS Fellow) and Cédric Sueur (2012 USIAS Fellow) have been elected as senior members of the Institut universitaire de France (IUF), for a term of five years, from 1 October 2024. They are among the group of ten new members from the University of Strasbourg.
Vincent Dubois is a full professor in sociology and political science at the University of Strasbourg, and member of the research unit Societies, Stakeholders and Governments in Europe (SAGE). Among other things, his work looks at how socially vulnerable individuals engage with public institutions, the roles these institutions play within their life trajectories, and how the welfare state serves as a means to control of those it purports to serve. Following the publication of The Bureaucrat and the Poor: Encounters in French Welfare Offices (2010 in French, 2017 in English), his book Surveillance and Sanctions over Recipients: A Coercive Turn in Social Welfare came out in 2021 (see interview). His work was reviewed in various media, including the French daily newspaper Le Monde.
Cédric Sueur is associate professor at the University of Strasbourg since 2011, and member of the Hubert Curien Pluridisciplinary Institute (IPHC). He studies animal behaviour, with a specific focus on the dynamics of social networks and the mechanisms of collective decision-making within social groups. In 2024, his work was featured in the documentary Saru: a history of cultural transmission.
Cliometric Society Award for Claude Diebolt
Claude Diebolt (2012 USIAS Fellow) is professor of economics at the University of Strasbourg, Bureau of Theoretical and Applied Economics (BETA). He was honoured on 1 June 2024 in Washington DC (USA) with the Cliometric Society's highest distinction, the Clio Can Award: "for exceptional support to the field of cliometrics". More information.
In May 2024, jointly with Michael Haupert, he also published the 3rd edition of the Handbook of Cliometricspublished by Springer Nature.
CNRS Silver Medal for Nicolas Giuseppone
Nicolas Giuseppone (2017 FRIAS-USIAS Fellow) was awarded the CNRS Silver Medal in March 2024. The Silver Medal is awarded by the French National Centre for Scientific Research (CNRS) to researchers for the originality, quality and importance of their work, recognised both nationally and internationally. Professor Giuseppone and his team at the Charles Sadron Institute (ICS) have developed outstanding scientific research in the fields of supramolecular chemistry, molecular machines and functional materials. In 2023, he was also appointed as a senior member of the Institut Universitaire de France (IUF).
ERC Advanced Grant for Jean-Luc Imler
Jean-Luc Imler (2014 USIAS Fellow), director of the Insect Models of Innate Immunity (M3i) research unit at the CNRS Institute of Molecular and Cellular Biology (IBMC) since 2016, has been awarded a €2.396 million ERC Advanced Grant for his research exploring the diversity of antiviral genes in animals. These genes evolve rapidly under the pressure of viruses, which constantly mutate to bypass the immune defences of the hosts they infect. High-throughput sequencing approaches coupled with bioinformatics analyses will be used to identify antiviral genes, which will be characterised to understand their mode of function, with the ultimate aim of inspiring innovative antiviral therapeutic strategies. His USIAS project on the antiviral immunity in insects was an important step towards this line of research.
