Sylviane Muller: promotion within Legion of Honour, new Strasbourg Drug Discovery and Development Institute

20 January 2021

On the 1st of January 2021, Sylviane Muller was promoted as Officer of the French National Order of the Legion of Honour and took up the position as director of the new Strasbourg Drug Discovery and Development Institute.

Sylviane Muller, Chair of Therapeutic Immunology at USIAS and Emeritus research director of the French National Centre for Scientific Research (CNRS) in the unit Biotechnology and cell signaling at the University of Strasbourg, has been promoted to the rank of Officer of the Order of the Legion of Honour, after having been named as Knight in 2010 and Officer of the National Order of Merit in 2016. This accolade is awarded in recognition of her recent scientific achievements and for her service as a member of the Committee of Analysis, Research and Expertise (CARE) for Covid-19, founded by the French President, Emmanuel Macron, in March 2020 and composed of twelve researchers and clinicians.

The 1st of January 2021 was also the kick-off date for the new Strasbourg Drug Discovery and Development Institute (IMS), of which Professor Muller is the first director. The institute was set up by the University of Strasbourg for a period of eight years and responds to the challenges faced by the pharma industry: to produce cutting-edge research up to the preclinical stage, to promote technological innovation through the creation of start-ups and to train the new generation of researchers in the management of drug innovation.

The IMS succeeds the Laboratory of Excellence (LabEx) Medalis and is based on an integrated structure composed of three hubs working in close synergy: Medalis, its drug research center; Euridis, its drug innovation management school; and Inedis, an incubator for start-ups. Thanks to its original design and the complementarity of its three pillars, IMS will form a solid base for the pharmaceutical value chain.
