Honours for Thomas Ebbesen

Thomas Ebbesen, USIAS Chair of Physical Chemistry of light-matter interactions and Director of USIAS, has been appointed to the Liliane Bettencourt Chair of Technological Innovation at the Collège de France in Paris for the academic year 2017-2018. He will give a series of lectures on The Alchemy of the Vacuum – Light-Matter Interactions in Physical Chemistry. His Inaugural Lecture will take place on 2 May 2018 at 18:00 at the Collège de France.

Ebbesen honorary doctorate LeuvenIn addition, Professor Ebbesen recently received the honorary doctorate from the University of Leuven during the celebrations of Patron Saint's Day on 2 February 2018. The Laudatio by Professors Johan Hofkens and Maarten Roeffaers, promotors doctor honoris causa indicated that he was awarded the doctorate as “one of the most influential researchers in the field of nanoscience […] working at the interphase between nanoscience and light, a field also referred to as plasmonics (see the full Laudatio and a background article).

Furthermore, the Quinquennial Anniversary Award of the European Materials Research Society (E-MRS) will be presented to Thomas Ebbesen at the 2018 Spring Meeting during the conference plenary session on Wednesday 20th June. The E-MRS created the award to recognise an individual’s contribution to the fundamental understanding of the science of materials through experimental and/or theoretical research (see the Award web page).
