Bert Meijer
E.W. “Bert” Meijer is distinguished university professor in the molecular sciences and professor of organic chemistry at the Eindhoven University of Technology (the Netherlands). He is founder and co-director of its Institute for Complex Molecular Systems (ICMS).
Professor Meijer received his PhD degree in the field of organic chemistry at the University of Groningen, under the supervision of Professor Hans Wijnberg. He then worked for ten years in industry (Philips Research Laboratories and DSM Research) where he was introduced to polymer materials. In 1991, he was appointed as professor at the Eindhoven University of Technology (TU/e). In the meantime, he has held part-time positions at Radboud University Nijmegen, the Max Planck Institute for Polymer Research (Mainz, Germany), the University of California Santa Barbara (USA) and is, since 2022, a visiting professorial fellow of the University of New South Wales in Sydney, Australia.
The Meijer Research Group at TU/e works on different aspects of supramolecular chemistry, with a special emphasis on chirality and closing the gap between small and large molecules. With the aim of controlling the properties of multicomponent molecular systems, the group has found unconventional functional materials for biomedical and electronic applications.
Bert Meijer is a member of many editorial advisory boards, including Advanced Materials, and is associate editor of the Journal of the American Chemical Society. He has received numerous awards, including the Spinoza Award. In 2020, he received the Royal decoration of Commander of the Order of the Lion of the Netherlands. He is an honorable member of a number of academies and societies, including the Royal Netherlands Academy of Arts and Sciences (KNAW), where he was appointed Academy Professor in 2014, and the US National Academy of Sciences.
