USIAS Chair Jean-Pierre Sauvage receives the Nobel Prize from the King of Sweden

12 December 2016

Jean-Pierre Sauvage, Professor emeritus at the University of Strasbourg, USIAS Chair in Chemistry and member of the USIAS Board, has received the Nobel Prize for Chemistry 2016 in Stockholm, from the hands of the King of Sweden. He shares the prize with Edinburgh-born Sir James Fraser Stoddart, and Dutch scientist Bernard Feringa. They were rewarded for their work on tiny molecular machines that scientists say can lead to new computer chips, batteries and energy storage systems.

Their ground-breaking work in developing molecular machinery has resulted in a toolbox of chemical structures which are used by researchers around the world to build increasingly advanced creations. One of the most striking examples is a molecular robot that can grasp and connect amino acids, the building block of protein.
