Essence in Science
On Friday 13 December, took place the USIAS Annual Symposium. The name “usias” means “essence(s)” in Latin, and this 1rst Symposium consequently features the theme Essence in Science, focusing on the very different ways that science aims to get at a fundamental understanding of its subject matter, and the need to combine a range of perspectives in order to truly understand its essence.
On this day, a score of invited eminent speakers share their views on the essence of their research, in terms of content, method and perspective, reflecting on how their specific approach contributes to gaining a fundamental understanding of their subject matter. In addition, a number of USIAS 2012 Fellows present the original, non-conventional research they are conducting as part of their Fellowship.
