Symposium USIAS 2014

In 2014 it is 100 years ago that the First World War started. This period was marked not only by profound political, economic and social changes but also by important changes in art and in the way people perceive the world.

At the occasion of welcoming the new USIAS 2014 Fellows, Professor Roland Recht, USIAS Chair in Historiography of Art, will present a keynote lecture titled:

1914-1918: World War I and Revolutions in Art.

The First World War was prefaced by profound changes in the field of arts and culture. The rise of the Avant-Garde before and after 1914: was accompanied by the birth of abstract art, cubism and collages, Futurism, Ready-made, Expressionism, Dada, and more. In short, this period contained all the seeds of the art of the 20th century. Professor Recht will show that these developments reveal a profound crisis in spirituality and at the same time they revealed the contours of a new existential outlook in the human world.
