Lecture by Serge Haroche during International Congress of Mathematical Physics (ICMP)
Professor Serge Haroche, from the Collège de France and the École normale supérieure of Paris, will give a public lecture on Saturday 6 July 2024, entitled “The usefulness of useless knowledge: reflections on the links between basic and applied research”. Professor Haroche is an eminent French physicist who was awarded the 2012 Nobel Prize for Physics, jointly with David Wineland, for having devised methods to study the quantum mechanical behaviour of individual photons.
Entry is free. The lecture will be in French with simultaneous interpretation into English.
The lecture will be given as part of the 21st International Congress of Mathematical Physics (ICMP) that will be held in Strasbourg, France, from 1-6 July 2024. This major event featuring plenary speakers from around the world takes place every three years; it is a forum to discuss new results and future challenges in the field, and includes award ceremonies for a number of prizes. ICMP 2024 is organized jointly the University of Strasbourg’s Institute for Advanced Mathematical Research (IRMA) and the Institute of Physics and Chemistry of Materials of Strasbourg (IPCMS). The event has attracted numerous sponsors, including funding from the USIAS Chair of Mathematics, Professor Nalini Anantharaman, who is chair of the local organising committee. Other USIAS Fellows are also contributing.
A Young Researcher Symposium will be held prior to the conference, on 28-29 June 2024.
