Massimiliano Bampi
Massimiliano Bampi is Professor of Germanic philology at the Department of Humanities, University of Trento (Italy). From 2004 to 2023 he worked as researcher, associate professor and professor at Ca’ Foscari University of Venice, where he taught Germanic philology, Swedish language and Swedish literature.
His research interests regard mainly medieval Scandinavian literatures (i.e., Old Norse, Old Swedish, Old Danish), Middle High German courtly literature and the reception of medieval Germanic texts (especially Scandinavian) in modern times. In these research areas he has authored volumes and articles (written in English, Italian, Swedish and German) with special reference to questions related to: 1) the role of translation in the development of the Scandinavian literary systems (especially Icelandic and Swedish) and forms of manipulations of the translated text in the target culture (especially Sweden and Denmark); 2) the question of the definition of saga genres in a synchronic and diachronic perspective, with special emphasis on the fornaldarsögur and on the dynamics of hybridization of various genres in the 14th and 15th centuries; 3) intertextual dynamics in multi-text manuscripts from the North-Germanic area (Sweden, Iceland and Denmark); 4) the Middle High German Minnesang and höfische Epik (especially Wolfram von Eschenbach’s Willehalm and Parzival); 5) the reception and rewriting of medieval texts in modern and contemporary Scandinavia and, to a lesser extent, in modern Germany.
He is a member of the leading team of Modes of Modification. Variance and Change in Medieval Manuscript Culture, an 8-year-research programme funded by the Swedish foundation Riksbankens Jubileumsfond (PI: Karl G. Johansson, University of Oslo). In his project, he investigates the role of multi-text manuscripts in approaching questions of generic perception and affiliation in late medieval Scandinavia.
Massimiliano Bampi is a member of the following Scandinavian scholarly associations: Svenska fornskriftsällskapet, Kungl. Humanistiska Vetenskaps-Samfundet i Uppsala, and Sällskapet för östnordisk filologi.
During his stay in Strasbourg he will be hosted by Dr. Marie-Sophie Winter (2023 Fellow) and will give a conference “Forms of Writing in the Medieval North: Multi-text Manuscripts from a Cultural-Historical Perspective” and a workshop “The Book between mediality, materiality and intermediality”.
