Two chemistry fellows in the spotlight

10 October 2019

Congratulations to Luisa de Cola (2017 USIAS Fellow) receiving the 2019 Izatt‐Christensen Award and to Thomas Hermans (2014 Fellow) for being selected as one of the World Economic Forum’s Young Scientists of the year. Both are chemists and professors at the Institute of Supramolecular Science and Engineering (ISIS) at the University of Strasbourg.

Luisa de Cola was the recipient of the 2019 Izatt‐Christensen Award, during the 14th International Symposium on Macrocyclic and Supramolecular Chemistry (ISMSC). She gave the lecture “From Self-assembly towards Artificial Virus. The Power of Supramolecular Chemistry” after the award ceremony on 5 June 2019.

The Izatt‐Christensen Award in macrocyclic and supramolecular chemistry recognises excellence in macrocyclic and supramolecular chemistry. It is one of the most prestigious awards in chemistry.

In July 2019, the World Economic Forum selected Thomas Hermans as one of the 21 Young Scientists of the year. He was nominated by the European Research Council, which awarded him a Starting Grant in 2017.

The Forum’s Young Scientists are a community of extraordinary scientists, under the age of 40, from across academic disciplines and geographies who commit to integrating scientific knowledge into society for the public good. The community was created in 2009 to convene rising-star scientists and engage them in the work of the World Economic Forum.
