16 April 2019

Claude Diebolt, 2012 USIAS Fellow, received the Sarton medal 2018-2019 for economics and management science for his research in the domain of Cliometrics.

Since 1984, Ghent University (Belgium) confers this award to researchers for their contribution to research in the history of science. The medal was presented by Professor Patrick Van Kenhove, dean of the Faculty of Economics and Business Administration, to Claude Diebolt during an award ceremony on 6 March 2019. It was also the occasion for Professor Diebolt to give his Sarton Lecture: We are Ninjas: how economic history has infiltrated economics.

George Sarton (1884-1956) is considered as one of the founding fathers of the history of science in the United States, and was an alumnus of Ghent University. The Sarton chairs and medals were created in his honour.
