Jean-Marie Lehn, 1987 Nobel Prize-winner, USIAS Chair of Chemistry of Complex Systems and Emeritus Professor of the University of Strasbourg, was conferred the Order of the Rising Sun, Second Class, Gold and Silver Star by the Government of Japan. He was decorated at a ceremony on 21 June 2019 by the Japanese Consulate-General of Strasbourg, Mr. Takamasa Sato, for his contribution to the mutual understanding and to the promotion of the academic exchange between Japan and France in chemistry’s field.

Instituted in 1875 by Emperor Meiji, this order is the oldest decoration created by the Japanese government, and among the highest. It is awarded to those who have made distinguished achievements in international relations, promotion of Japanese culture, advancements in their field, development in welfare or preservation of the environment.
