Courtin

USIAS Fellow 2015

Sandrine Courtin is Professor in Nuclear Physics at the University of Strasbourg and Honorary Visiting Professor at the University of York (UK). She obtained her PhD in Subatomic Physics at the University of Paris Sud Orsay in 1999 and her Habilitation at the University of Strasbourg in 2007. Sandrine has been lecturing at the University of Strasbourg on Electromagnetism, Quantum Mechanics, Subatomic Physics  and Stellar Physics. Her research studies are carried out at the Institut Pluridisciplinaire Hubert Curien in the Department for Subatomic Researches.

In the last 15 years, Sandrine has been the spokesperson of numerous nuclear physics experiments and projects at some of the largest facilities in Canada, Italy, USA and France. Her research studies concern the interplay between reaction mechanisms and nuclear structure. They are broad ranging from fusion and transfer reactions in heavy systems to deep subbarrier fusion in the light systems involving carbon and oxygen nuclei. The latter have strong synergies with astrophysics and the synthesis of chemical elements in stars, as well as the occurrence of nuclear molecules. Sandrine Courtin is the author of 130 articles in peer-reviewed journals such as Physical Review and Nature. Her projects have been supported by the European FP7 programme, the French ANR and by the IdEX Formation and Attractivity programmes of the University of Strasbourg (2015). She has strong interest in public engagement and has been invited to join the project ’Women in Physics’ organized by the University of Strasbourg Scientific Culture Department. In addition she is giving large audience colloquiums as well as lectures in high schools on nuclear fusion by quantum tunneling and nuclear astrophysics.

As part of her fellowship, Sandrine Courtin works on the project Strong constraints on the life cycle of massive stars by fusion reaction measurements.
